Snow is again falling in New Zealand as the country prepares for another night of freezing temperatures, bitter winds, sleet and snow.

The records keep falling along with the snow in New Zealand as it shivers through what weather forecasters are calling a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic cold snap.

On Monday Auckland saw snow for the first time in 35 years and on Tuesday the snowing arrived at Dargaville - a two-and-a-half hour drive further north.

Many roads around the country remain closed and airports are battling to shift flight-delayed commuters.

Some dairy farmers say they may have to dump their milk if tankers cannot get through.

In Christchurch and Wellington, hundreds of householders are without power.

Half a metre of snow is expected to fall in some areas of the south overnight.

On Monday MetService head forecaster Peter Kreft told the New Zealand Herald the polar blast was "of the order of a 50-year'' event and warned it could last for several more days.

"It's a once-in-many-decades event. We are probably looking at something like, in terms of extent and severity, maybe 50 years,'' he said.ABC All Rights Reserved
