You stock jewellery by Marco Bicego, who is considered one of Italy’s up-and-coming jewellers. How would you describe his work?
His work is very creative, beautiful and organic. Marco designs jewellery with just the right combination of tradition and modernity, pieces that last from one season to the next. The best overall term for his jewellery is ‘everyday luxury’.
He has quite a following throughout the world, especially in Europe and the US. What celebrities are often seen wearing his designs?
I was looking through an American Vogue and noted that Hillary Clinton was wearing his three-strand paradise necklace with a beautiful suit.
How does the European jewellery aesthetic differ to New Zealand or Australian designs?
I am very pro New Zealand crafted jewellery; however, now that I have been in the industry for a while it is very easy to spot the difference between Italian-made jewellery and jewellery imported from Asia. It is well known in the industry that they are often mass produced with poor-quality diamonds. I love the passion with which the Italians make their jewellery and their innate sense of style. All the jewellery designers I have selected from Italy use ‘conflict free’ diamonds. This is very important to me and I love being able to reassure my customers that there are not buying diamonds that are gained through wars and unethical practices.
What other Italian jewellery ranges do you import?
Another range of jewellery I import is from Damiani, one of the best jewellery houses in the world. They have numerous celebrities wearing their jewellery, Sophia Loren, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston and Sharon Stone.
