Bio-Oil gets involved with the Red Cross
Sep 18, 2008

In May 2004, Bio-Oil was contacted by the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust, following reports from parents of children in the Burns Unit of the hospital that they were experiencing great results from using the product.

Not only was it helping with burns scars, but its effect on pruritus (post-burn itch) was even more significant. By helping to alleviate the extreme dryness and often intolerable itchiness caused by this condition, Bio-Oil was enabling these children to sleep better, reducing their anxiety (previously they had been driven to scratching their dressings off) and ultimately helping them to make a quicker recovery.

In light of these findings, Bio-Oil began donating a bottle of Bio-Oil to each patient discharged from the Burns Unit.

Another important benefit that became clear was the positive psychological effect that the soothing action of the Bio-Oil massage had on the parent-child relationship.

Following burns injuries, parents can often experience feelings of guilt, as they assume responsibility for the incident, and children can feel unloved and alone.

The physical touch created by regularly rubbing in Bio-Oil was going a long way towards helping to re-establish this emotional connection.

By 2006, the product was drawing such good feedback that it was decided that a study would be carried out in order to quantify the results reported from parents of burns patients.

Of the 27 parents that took part in the study, 19 reported that Bio-Oil positively affected itching, 26 said that it helped with scarring, and 26 said that it had helped improve their emotional bond with their children. These results were presented at the 2006 International Burns Conference.

Bio-Oil continues to be involved with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust and is committed to growing this partnership that helps children get better sooner.
