Somare denies Taiwan scandal involvement
BY ABC | May 13, 2008

Papua New Guinean (PNG) Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has denied any involvement in the Taiwan Cash for Recognition scandal.

Taiwan's Government has paid more than $30 million in exchange for diplomatic recognition.

Last week Taiwan's Vice Premier and Foreign Minister were forced to step down because of a multi-million dollar secret payment for the two men who said they could get PNG to agree to a formal diplomatic relationship.

Sir Michael admitted meeting Taiwan's Foreign Minister in Singapore last year but told Parliament he knows nothing about the scandal.

"I do not have to come clean on something which I never was party to," he said.

Sir Michael singed PNG's One China Policy in 1976 and said the Government would not be changing its position.
