Wines of the week

Seven top wines from the MiNDFOOD Wine Editor's weekly tastings, by MiNDFOOD.

Wines of the week

2006 Menhir NZero Negroamaro $20-21

Negro is Latin for “black”, amaro is Italian for “bitter” and this grape is thought to have been taken to Puglia in southern Italy by Illyrian colonists before the Greeks arrived in the seventh century BC.

Wherever it did originate, it’s a stunning wine at this price. Soft, fruity, dense and spicy… what more could you ask for.

This is great value. From specialist wine stores or Bennett & Deller for stockists near you, phone (09) 378 9463.

2005 Green Point Heathcote Shiraz $31-32

This succulent shiraz proves there are more strings to Australia’s red wine bow than just big, bold Barossa-grown wines.

The little known Heathcote region in Victoria has a cool climate (in Australian terms), which creates this taut, muscular wine which has more than mere fruit flavours.

It’s a subtle, sexy shiraz that is great value. Try it. From specialist wine stores.

2005 Barco Negro Douro Vindima Lurton $24-25

A modern Portuguese red that will blow your preconceptions and taste buds out of the water, without denting your budget.

Big, rich fruit flavours combine with lovely savoury, spicy tastes. This is outstanding value. From specialist wine stores or Bennett & Deller for stockists near you, phone (09) 378 9463.

2007 Villa Maria Marlborough Private Bin Riesling $17-18

Everyday wine it may be, but this lively Marlborough riesling is one of the purest whites at this price. Apples, limes and honey flavours intermingle here. Widely available.

2006 Esk Valley Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay $20-21

This is a full bodied, rounded Hawke’s Bay chardonnay, with nectarine, peach and melon flavours in a fruitforward style. Widely available.

2006 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon $24-25

This Hawke’s Bay blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon delivers a robust, big bodied red with spicy flavours, attractive oak and a lingering finish. Widely available.

2006 Vidal Marlborough Pinot Noir $24-25

This is a very good everyday pinot noir from New Zealand’s largest wine region. Bright, clean fresh fruity flavours lead the way in of this robust, medium bodied red. Spicy flavours add interest to every sip. Widely available.
