General Manager of Salvos Stores Australian Eastern Territory Neville Barrett said today, “Over the last ten years we have seen a 75% increase in sales for Salvos Stores. With the rising cost of living now impacting on a large section of the community, people from a diverse range of socio economic backgrounds now shop at Salvos Stores”.

All proceeds from Salvos Stores go towards running vital Salvation Army programs which assist the less fortunate. By shopping at and donating to Salvos Stores the community is also helping the environment by reducing landfill.

National Op Shop Week is a joint initiative of DoSomething! and the National Association of Charitable Recycling Organisations (NACRO). The week seeks to raise awareness of the importance of supporting op shops in our community.

NACRO Chief Executive Officer Kerryn Caulfield said: “National Op Shop Week is an opportunity to celebrate the important and multi-faceted role of op shops in our community: the fundraising to support the vital work of the charities; the volunteers that staff them; the bargain shopping; the social connection they provide to the charities and their contribution to the environment – promoting re-use and reducing waste going to landfill.

“Charity op shops are integral to the fabric of Australian society. We love to know that items we donate will be put to good use and that the proceeds from our purchases go to help others in the community,” says Ms Caulfield.

For National Op Shop Week Salvos Stores are bringing the store to you through the creation of their ‘Pop Up Op Shop’. A converted van, powered by eco-friendly solar panels, transforms into a funky fashion store which will be popping up at Martin Place on Monday 25th August from 7.30am to 3.30pm. And as shopping is such hungry work, Salvos Stores will be providing free breakfast baps for everyone between 7.30am – 8.30am! A fashion show will also be staged at lunch time to showcase the vintage and current recycled fashion trends found at local Salvos Stores, perfect for the fashion savvy, budget conscious consumer.

Salvos Stores have been helping struggling families and individuals for over 125 years, and have raised millions of dollars to support The Salvation Army. Pre-loved and recycled furniture, clothing and goods are donated to the stores and then sold at reasonable and fair prices. All profits from these sales go towards running vital Salvation Army programs which assist the less fortunate. Goods are also distributed free of charge to those in need through The Salvation Army’s network of Community Services Centres. By donating to and shopping at Salvos Stores the community is recycling and reducing landfill. This is of great benefit to our environment.

By taking part in National Op Shop Week, and shopping and donating at your community Salvos Store you are supporting the mission and programs of The Salvation Army. Salvos Stores use all their proceeds to fund vital work in the community on a weekly basis.
