19 years after her untimely death we celebrate the life and legacy of the people's princess.

19 years ago today, Princess Diana, the people’s princess, lost her life in a tragic car accident at the age of 36. 19 years on, the world still mourns for Diana.

Diana’s legacy lives on in her sons, who earlier this year spoke to ABC News about her influence.

“We will do everything we can to make sure that she’s never forgotten and carry on all the special gifts, as such, that she had and that she portrayed while she was alive,” Harry said.

“I hope she’s looking down, you know, with tears in her eyes, being incredibly proud of what we’ve established,” Harry said of his mother. “I’m sure she’s longing for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again.

“I hope that everything we do privately and officially, that it makes her proud,” he added. “I think losing your mother at such a young age does end up shaping your life massively. Of course it does, and now I find myself trying to be there and give advice to other people who are in similar positions.”

Although Princess Diana passed when Harry was only 12, he admitted that he had spent his life working towards making a difference in the world – a virtuous path he knows would have made his mother proud.

“All I want to do is make my mother incredibly proud… That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

Speaking about the effect his mother’s death had on, not only himself, but the rest of the world, Prince Harry noted that he felt a duty to uphold Princess Diana’s values.

“When she died, there was a gaping hole, not just for us but also for a huge amount of people across the world,” he says. “If I can try and fill a very small part of that, then job done. I will have to, in a good way, spend the rest of my life trying to fill that void as much as possible. And so will William.”

Just last week during a visit to a hospice in Luton, Prince William spoke with a young man who had lost also lost his mother, saying: “I know how you feel…I miss my mother every day. It’s okay to feel sad, it’s okay for you to miss her.”

To commemorate the anniversary of her death, flowers, messages, balloons and well-wishes were placed outside the gates of Kensington Palace, proving the legacy of Diana lives on well after her death.

Twitter has erupted with tributes and touching anecdotes about Diana.
