How Dame Julie Andrews is bringing the magic of the arts to children

Dame Julie Andrews is one of the greatest performers of our time. From Eliza Doolittle, Mary Poppins, Maria von Trapp, all the way through to Queen Clarisse Rinaldi in The Princess Diaries, Dame Julie has won the hearts of fans of all ages.

Now, Dame Julie is bringing her talents and experience to preschool children, in her new Netflix series “Julie’s Greenroom.” Dame Julie is not only a co-creator and executive producer of the show, but also its star, alongside puppets from the legendary Jim Henson’s productions.

At a recent press conference, Dame Julie shared her motivations in creating the program. “I’ve long wanted to do a program to convey the joy of arts to children and to families, and to just specialise in that,” she said. “I don’t think anybody dislikes puppets,” she added.

The series follows the “Greenies” (the puppets) as they explore musical and theatrical arts under the direction of Ms Julie, and her assistant Gus. Almost every episode features an original song; and guest stars showcase a new art form each week. The cast has an impressive line up of guest stars including Alec Baldwin, Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles and Idina Menzel.

The creative team behind the program said that the episodes emphasise the accessibility of arts for everyone, and hope the program is one for the whole family to enjoy. “Although it is a preschool show… it is a show we hope families will watch together.”

Julie’s Greenroom is now streaming on Netflix.
