iD Dunedin Fashion Week: International Emerging Designer Awards

Now in its 12th year, the iD Dunedin Fashion Week’s International Emerging Designer Awards once again unveiled the unique designs of talented designers from all around the globe. This year’s stellar judging panel consisted of local designers – Tanya Carlson, Kate Sylvester and Margi Robertson of NOM*D – who were joined by this year’s guest of honour, New Zealand-born, UK-based fashion designer Emilia Wickstead.

While 38 collections from around the globe, hailing from Otago to Italy and everywhere in between, graced the catwalk, it was a trio of Trans-Tasman designers that scooped the top prizes. 24-year-old Jordan Anderson from Queensland University of Technology secured first place, taking home a cash prize of $6000 for his Cool Runnings-inspired collection “Global Citizen.” Second place went to Hannah Kim from University of Technology Sydney, for her collection “Ode to Monster” and Stephanie Frig took home third place with her vibrant and arresting collection “All About Nagymama.” Judges were so captivated by Frig’s collection that she was offered a London-based internship with guest judge Emilia Wickstead. Frig features in our “Five to Watch” designers in the new A/W16 issue of MiNDFOOD STYLE on sale now. “I’m speechless, I was not expecting that I just feel so grateful to be even given the opportunity to showcase but to win something on top of that is a bonus,” Frig told MiNDFOOD STYLE.

Inside the Autumn/Winter ’16 issue of MiNDFOOD STYLE

After hopping off a 15-hour flight and travelling three hours up the coast through what seemed like a never-ending desert, the last thing we expected was to be surrounded by azure blue waters, cheetahs, giraffes and herds of once-extinct-in-the-wild Arabian Oryx. The element of surprise that our first shoot location Sir Bani Yas offered encapsulates Abu Dhabi: the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and the dramatic backdrop that brought the best of both local and international fashion to life for our Autumn/Winter 2016 issue.

Style A/W 16 cover full width

Shooting some of New Zealand’s most iconic and fashion-forward designers – Trelise Cooper, Julian Danger and Adrian Hailwood – as exotic wildlife sauntered by was just the first part of an incredible two-week journey across the region. No fashion shoot in the Middle East would complete without the undulating golden sand dunes of the Rub’ al Khali desert, a train of  camels and our cover star, Rocket the falcon who quite possibly steals the show from our striking cover model, Valentina.

Fashion should be daring, vibrant and impossible to ignore, much like the vibrant vistas of Abu Dhabi. We hope the A/W 2016 issue of MiNDFOOD STYLE takes you not only on an unforgettable odyssey through the spellbinding capital of the UAE but also on an adventure through the mesmerising world of fashion, beauty and decor.
