Gareth Pugh heading to NZ

British designer Gareth Pugh, best known for his shaped wearable sculptures and experimentation with form and volume, is taking part in the ground breaking AUT Shapeshifting: Fashion and Textile conference in Auckland from April 14 to 16.

He is one 50 presenters and exhibitors who will be participating in the ticketed event that will explore the idea of transformative paradigms of fashion and textile design.

Pugh, who to date has mostly presented uncommercial collections, is certainly known for pushing the boundaries in this area. For his final year collection at Central Saint Martins in 2003 he used balloons to accentuate models’ joints and limbs.

Since then he has enthralled, captivated and earned the respect of the world’s leading style commentators with his original cutting-edge fashion as art presentations. His most recent spring/summer 2014 collection was more wearable but kept true to his sculptural aesthetic to produce beautiful alien-esque silhouettes.

Other international keynote speakers include performance artist and designer Nick Cave (not the singer); fashion theorist Otto Von Busch who co-authored Buddha Style: A discussion about the Buddha’s radical teachings on fashion and forgiveness (2012) and professor/researcher at Parsons the New School for Design, New York; experimental textile designer Elaine Ng Yan Ling; and fashion designers Shingo Sato and Ying Gao.

Shapeshifting is believed to be the biggest event of its kind to be held anywhere in the world in 2014 and AUT head of department – fashion and textiles Andreas Mikellis says the intention is for it to become a bi-annual event – International keynote speakers have already been locked in for 2016.

The conference will be held at the Viaduct Events Centre and other venues including the AUT University and Auckland Art Gallery.
