Japan increases security for whaling fleet
An unnamed coast guard official told Japanese media more officers than ever before would accompany the Antarctic whaling fleet.
But the official refused to say how officers would protect the fleet in confrontations with activists from the militant Sea Shepherd conservation group.
Japan has pumped an extra AU$27 million into protection measure for its whalers this season.
The fleet’s factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, is reportedly taking on fuel and supplies in the Japanese port of Innoshima in preparation for weighing anchor.
