A New Zealand woman feared dead following a crocodile attack during a night swim at a beach in far north Queensland was in the region to celebrate her friend’s recovery from cancer, according to Australian media.

The ABC says Cindy Waldron and her childhood friend, Leeann Mitchell, were celebrating the end of Mitchell’s cancer treatment in the Daintree National Park near Cape Tribulation, north of Cairns.

The pair were said to have been walking arm-in-arm in knee-deep water along Thornton Beach on Sunday night when Mitchell felt something brush against her leg.

Waldron was taken moments later as her friend tried in vain to save her.

An air and sea search on Monday failed to find any sign of Waldron, who lives in the New South Wales town of Lithgow. She moved to Australia from New Zealand 18 years ago.

The incident has reignited calls for there to be a crocodile hunt, while some have  said that human error should not mean animals need to be killed.
