Calling for connection

Fone Free February is calling for us to put down the phone and be here now.

Calling for connection

Launching today, Fone Free February is sparking a conversation about the importance of mindfulness.

Aimed at creating a conscious appreciation of the now, Fone Free February asks us to put down our phones and focus on each other, our surroundings and most importantly, being present.

In a world that is consumed by technology, where importance is placed on Twitter trends over self-preservation and our thoughts are filtered by feeds, being mindful is an art-form often ignored.

Jack Manning Bancroft, CEO and Co-Founder of the initiative became aware of the need to reconnect during a phone-free stint whereby he realised just what a hold technology has on our lives.

“With an hour to wait for my phone to be activated I headed to the food court to grab lunch. Having no phone to look down at, I looked up and saw families, couples, friends, all together, but all on their phones,” Bancroft said.

Going on a “phone diet” proved to be a cathartic experience for Bancroft, which lead to the initiative behind Fone Free February.

Calling for connection by hosting dinners around Australia and the rest of the world, Bancroft is aiming to raise money for various charities including Accessible Arts, Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre and ATYP.

Consciousness of being present in the moment is the underlying message of this altruistic venture. As the need to reflect both internally and externally is becoming increasingly important, the message of bringing back dinnertime does more than feed our appetites. It provides a physical check-in to an undisturbed and stimulating experience that many take for granted.
