The much loved British comedian, actress, singer and songwriter Victoria Wood has sadly passed away at the age of 62, after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her two children Grace and Henry.
Wood was best known for her sketch series ‘Acorn Antiques’, ‘Victoria Wood as Seen on TV’, ‘Dinnerladies’ and ‘Pat and Margaret’, in which she appeared with her frequent comedy partner Julie Walters. Wood and Walters met in 1978 when they shared the stage at the Bush Theatre in London, sparking a lifelong friendship and artistic partnership. There was a great deal of mutual respect and trust between them, Walters described the loss of Wood as incalculable and said she was “too heart sore to comment.”
Walters and Wood were well respected collaborators, Wood spoke of the success of their collaboration in an interview with Michael Parkinson in 2001, she said: “It’s mystical and technically she’s so superb and you can write anything to her, like a concert pianist you don’t give them chopsticks to play you give them something difficult they can get their teeth into. That’s what you can do with her because she has such a range.”
She was a well regarded jack-of-all-trades with talents in writing, performing, singing and song writing. She created a pathway for women comedians and was awarded both a OBE in 1997 and a CBE in 2008 from the Queen.
