New Zealand is set to get an inside glimpse of the richness and vibrancy of African culture through the creations of some of the region’s most talented fashion designers and labels. The inaugural Africa Fashion Fashion will be held in Wellington on the 28th of May and has been organised by Pinaman Owusu-Banahene, the founder of social impact enterprise Africa Design Journey through Australasia (ADJOAA).

“I hope the Africa Fashion Festival provides an outlet for all New Zealanders to experience the cultural richness and incredible artistic talent from the diverse and vibrant continent of Africa,” Owusu-Banahene says. A handful of international designers, including talent that shows at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa, Berlin Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo, will show at the event alongside local emerging talent, Chido Dimairo and Zainab Sokona-Whyte.

In collaboration with the designers showcasing at the event, the festival will support the establishment of key social initiatives for young Africans in New Zealand and across parts of Africa including a mentoring programme to empower young Africans in New Zealand to engage in their communities and an internship for design graduates with participating designers.

15 per cent of the proceeds from the Africa Fashion Festival  ticket sales will go towards supporting a school in Jamestown in Accra, Ghana. Tickets can be purchased here.
