Watch a 102 jazz dancer see herself swing it on film for the very first time and try and not be moved

102 year-old dancer Alice Barker sees herself dance on film for first time

Alice Barker might be a frail, bed-ridden 102 year-old woman now, but she spent her life dancing as a chorus girl for the likes of Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly in some of the top clubs all over the USA. And boy could she shake it.

Alice had never seen herself dance on screen due to a misspelling of her name, and she had lost her photographs from the time. So her friend David Shuff teamed up with Mark Cantor who runs the online archive Jazz on Film to find Miss Barker’s ‘soundies’ (short musical films). He showed them to Alice and her reaction was incredible. She snapped her fingers, crooned ‘it don’t mean a thing if you aint got that swing,’ and told Shuff that she wished she could get out of her bed and do it all again.

For Alice, dancing was everything.

“I used to often say to myself, I am being paid to do something that I enjoy doing and I would do it for free,” she says on the video.

“Because it just felt so good doing it, because that music, you know, I just get carried away in it.”
